Custom IEM Singapore Guide: Impressions, Fitting and Ordering

  • 7 min read

AAW Z06 6-driver custom in-ear monitors, built from ear impressions by Null Audio's sister brand AAW

To get a custom IEM in Singapore, you choose an AAW model, have ear impressions taken at our Playfair Road studio for SGD 50 by appointment, and we build the monitors to the shape of your ears. Outside Singapore, you can email us 3D scans instead. Every custom IEM comes with a Null Audio cable, a free refit within 30 days and a 1-year warranty.

This guide is for anyone looking for a custom IEM in Singapore, or ordering one from us from overseas. It walks through each step: impressions, scans, choosing a model, the cable, refits and warranty. Our custom IEM hub has the same steps in short form.

Key takeaways

  • Ear impressions at the Null Audio studio cost SGD 50, take 10–20 minutes and need an appointment.
  • From outside Singapore, you can email one STL scan file per ear instead of posting impressions.
  • AAW custom IEMs use recessed 0.78 mm 2-pin sockets and come with a Null Audio cable.
  • Refits are free within 30 days of delivery, and the warranty runs for 1 year on the IEM and its cable.
  • Custom IEMs are built to order, so the current lead time is shown on each product page.

What is a custom IEM?

A custom IEM (custom in-ear monitor, or CIEM) is an in-ear monitor whose shell is moulded to the exact shape of your ears. A universal IEM is the opposite: one shell shape for everyone, sealed with silicone or foam ear tips.

Because the shell follows your ear canal and concha, a custom IEM seals well and stays comfortable for long sessions. The concha is the bowl of the outer ear. A good seal matters for hearing as well as sound. The World Health Organization advises well-fitted earphones so you don't need to raise the volume in noisy places (WHO).

Our custom IEMs are made by AAW (Advanced AcousticWerkes), our sister brand. AAW builds each pair from your ear impressions or a 3D scan of your ears.

How do you order a custom IEM in Singapore?

Ordering a custom IEM in Singapore takes five steps. You can start online or at our studio.

  1. Order your model online or at the studio.
  2. Get your ear impressions taken at the studio, or have your ears scanned.
  3. Bring or send us the impressions, or email the scan files with your order number.
  4. We build your monitors.
  5. Collect them at the studio, or we ship them to you.

The full checklist is on our How to order custom IEMs page. Keep it open while you order.

Ear impressions for a custom IEM in Singapore

An ear impression is a soft mould of your ear canal and outer ear. It is the template for your shells: AAW shapes each shell to match it.

We take impressions at our studio for SGD 50. It takes 10–20 minutes. The studio is at #01-03, LHK2 Building, 76 Playfair Road, Singapore 367996.

Book first

Impressions are by appointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +65 8731 5476 or email sales@null-audio.com. The studio is open Monday and Wednesday to Friday, 9:30am to 6pm. Tuesday and Saturday are by appointment. We are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Tip Clean your ears before your appointment for the best result. Your shells can only fit as well as the impression.

What happens at the appointment

The impression is taken with your mouth open. Your ear canal changes shape when your jaw moves, so an open-mouth impression helps the fit hold when you talk or sing. Makers differ on how to keep the jaw open: Noble Audio asks for a bite block throughout (Noble Audio), while an audiologist writing in The Hearing Review prefers taking them without one (The Hearing Review). For AAW custom IEMs, impressions are taken with the mouth open.

Ordering from outside Singapore: 3D scans

You don't need to post anything. We accept STL files from either of two kinds of scan:

  • A scan of physical ear impressions, taken by an audiologist and then scanned.
  • A direct scan of your ear canals, made with a 3D ear scanner.

Email the files with your order number to support@null-audio.com. Check three things first:

  • There is one STL file per ear, named left and right.
  • Each scan goes past the second bend of the ear canal and includes the whole concha.
  • The impressions were taken with the mouth open, using a bite block.

Noble Audio gives the same depth rule: just past the second bend, in the open-mouth position (Noble Audio). Bring the AAW Impressioning Guide, linked from our custom IEM hub, to your audiologist. If you need help finding one, email sales@null-audio.com.

Posting physical impressions

If you prefer to post impressions, pack them in a protective container with a copy of your order confirmation. Ship them with tracking to the studio address (Attn: Lab Team). Declare them under USD 200, as our Shipping & Return page explains.

Which custom model should you choose?

Browse every model in our custom in-ear monitor collection. The range runs from the M20 and A3H+ LUX, a 3-driver hybrid, to the 6-driver Z06 and the 14-driver Canary Pro.

To design the look of yours, use the AAW Custom Builder. It loads many images, so give it up to 30 seconds.

Audition before you order

Listening first is the safest way to choose. You can audition at our studio; book ahead and ask which models are on demo. Several of our custom models also come as universal IEMs, so you can hear the tuning with ear tips. Browse them in the universal in-ear monitor collection.

Already own an IEM?

You may not need a new one. Our Earphone Reshell Service by AAW rebuilds an IEM you already own into a custom shell made from your impressions. Most balanced-armature IEMs can be reshelled; contact us if you're not sure about yours.

Which cable comes with a custom IEM?

Every custom IEM comes with a Null Audio cable, built by hand in our Singapore studio. When you order, you can upgrade to a higher-tier cable from our range. Canary Pro, for example, comes with a 48-inch Lune cable with a 4.4 mm balanced plug.

AAW custom IEMs use recessed 0.78 mm 2-pin sockets. A recessed socket sits slightly below the shell surface. Our standard 2PIN (0.78) plug fits both flat and recessed sockets, so any of our cables with that option will fit. See cables for AAW for each model.

New to connectors? Read 2-pin, MMCX, IPX or Pentaconn Ear. For the player end, see 3.5 mm, 2.5 mm or 4.4 mm balanced?

What if the fit isn't right?

If the fit isn't right, refits are free within 30 days of delivery. For overseas orders, return shipping is charged separately.

  • Warranty: 1 year on the IEM and its cable, covering defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty is transferable.
  • Extended warranty: register your product on our site for 3 more months.
  • After the warranty: AAW IEMs bought within 3 years can be repaired at a flat rate of USD 110. That covers cracked shells, damaged sockets, damaged drivers and blocked nozzles.
  • Returns: each custom IEM is made for your ears only, so it can't be returned for change of mind. Defects are always covered by the warranty.

If an AAW IEM changes hands, our ownership transfer service reshells it to the new owner's ears for USD 150. Full terms are on our warranty page.

Lead time, collection and delivery

All custom IEMs are built to order, so they ship once they are made. The current lead time is shown on each product page.

In Singapore, you can collect your IEMs at our studio, or we deliver them. Overseas orders ship with FedEx, free from USD 250, with a tracking number by email. To keep your new cable in good shape, read How to make your IEM cable last.
