Null Audio began in Singapore in 2008, at a time when the local portable hi-fi scene was full of people who cared a great deal about their music. They wanted cables made for their own earphones, so we started making them.
Eighteen years on, we still make IEM and headphone cables by hand in Singapore. We work from our workshop and showroom at 76 Playfair Road, and the range has grown from a handful of custom orders into cables with names many of you know well: Lune, Thera, Tiburon, Aoraki, Epsilon, Hakone, Arete. Each one is still braided, soldered and finished by hand, one at a time.
Along the way, more than 3,000 of you have written reviews. Some of you have visited the showroom to try a cable before buying. Some have trusted us with a well-used cable for repair. That is what has kept us going, and we are grateful for every one of you.
The new mark
This month Null Audio looks a little different, starting with our mark. At its centre is ∅, the sign for zero and the empty set, which has been part of our name from the start. It is now cut out of a solid, rounded square, so it reads cleanly whether it is a few pixels on a screen or printed on a box.
Beside it, the null audio wordmark has been redrawn by hand, letter by letter, rather than set in an off-the-shelf typeface. It only ever appears in black or white. For engraving on hardware, the ∅ stands on its own, without the square, so it stays crisp on something as small as a plug or a splitter.
What Null means
Null means zero: zero noise, zero haze, nothing lost between you and the music. A cable's first job is to carry everything your player sends, the detail, the space around each instrument, the texture of a voice, all the way to your ears. Every Null Audio cable starts there.
Once nothing is lost, each cable can have its own voice. Copper brings weight and warmth; silver brings air and detail. It is a little like a good camera lens, which is sharp first and then renders colour in its own way. We put it simply: transparent first, then tuned to your taste.
A new website
Our cables are now photographed in the studio, so you can see the braid and the hardware the way we see them on the bench. The site is also easier to shop. Every cable has a sound profile, so you can start from the sound you want. And if you already own a pair of IEMs, Find my IEM will tell you which connector you need.
What comes next
The first cable of this new chapter is Ethos Ultra, a coaxial cable with swappable plugs, including a USB-C DAC. There is more to come, and we will share it when it is ready.
We will keep doing what we have always done: make cables by hand in Singapore, stand behind every one of them, and listen to the people who use them. If you are passing through Singapore, come by Playfair Road and say hello. If not, we are always a message away.
Thank you for the last eighteen years. We are looking forward to the next ones.
