Custom IEMs

How to take ear impressions for custom IEMs

A custom IEM can only fit as well as the impression it’s built from. Ask an audiologist for full-shell, open-mouth impressions taken with a bite block, with the canal past the second bend and the whole concha, helix and tragus filled. Check them against the photos below before you send them to us.

The impression

What a custom IEM impression needs

AAW builds every shell from this area of the ear. Anything the impression misses, the shell can’t follow.

Ear impression area for a custom IEM: canal extended past the second bend, with the helix, tragus and concha filled, including the edge of the concha.
The impression area: fill the concha, helix and tragus, including the edge of the concha, and extend the canal past the second bend.
Ear canal

Extended past the second bend, with a smooth, complete tip. A short canal can lose the seal.

Outer ear

The full concha bowl including its edge, the helix, the tragus and the anti-tragus. These hold the IEM in place.

Mouth

Open, with a bite block, in the same jaw position for both ears until the material has cured. Your ear canal changes shape when your jaw moves, so the IEM keeps its seal when you talk or sing.

Material

Medical-grade silicone impression material suitable for deep impressions.

Before you go

Before your appointment

Have a professional take them

Have your impressions taken by an audiologist or another licensed professional. Please don’t try a DIY kit: the material goes deep into the ear canal. The clinician should look into your ear canals first, confirm it is safe to go ahead and place the otoblock (the small foam or cotton stop that protects your eardrum).

What to ask for

Show your audiologist this page, or ask for: “full-shell, open-mouth impressions with a bite block, medical-grade silicone, canal past the second bend, full concha and helix, otoblocks left in”.

Clean ears

Have your ears cleaned beforehand if you tend to build up wax: it gives a cleaner impression.

Step by step

During the session

1. Steady the jaw

Bite on the bite block and keep the same jaw position for both ears until the material has fully cured.

2. Place the otoblock deep and safely

After looking into the ear, the clinician places the otoblock beyond the second bend when appropriate. Leave it attached to the impression when you send it.

3. Inject slowly, deep to shallow

Fill the canal first, then the concha and helix, without trapping air.

4. Wait for a full cure

Taking the impression out too early can bend the canal or tear the fine details. After removal, the clinician checks both the ear and the impression.

What a good pair looks like

Look at both impressions from the front, back, top and bottom. A good pair is complete from every side.

Checklist

  • The canal is smooth, complete and goes past the second bend.
  • The edge of the concha bowl shows clearly.
  • The helix and tragus are there, not thin or collapsed.
  • No air bubbles, drag lines, torn tips, folds or missing surfaces.

When to ask for a retake

If an impression looks like any of these, ask your audiologist to take it again before you send it. A retake on the day is quicker than a refit later.

Ear impression to retake: the outer ear is too thin, without enough concha and helix.
Too thin: not enough concha and helix, so the shell has too little body.
Ear impression to retake: the canal is too short and does not reach past the second bend.
Not extended: the canal is too short or incomplete, so the IEM may not seal.
Ear impression to retake: a collapsed, flattened shape with the outer-ear details missing.
Collapsed: the outer ear is flattened and its landmarks are missing.
Ear impression to retake: the helix, tragus or concha is incomplete.
Missing landmarks: an incomplete helix, tragus or concha, so the IEM may not sit steadily.

Questions

Common questions

Can I take my own ear impressions?

No. The material goes deep into the ear canal, so an audiologist or another licensed professional should look into your ears first and place the otoblock. DIY impressions also tend to stop short of the second bend.

Why does my mouth need to be open?

Your ear canal changes shape when your jaw moves. An open-mouth impression taken with a bite block keeps the seal when you talk, sing or chew.

Can I send a 3D ear scan instead?

Yes. Email the STL or HPS files with your order number to support@null-audio.com, one file per ear. The scan must go past the second bend and include the whole concha.

Where can I get ear impressions in Singapore?

At our studio, 76 Playfair Road, for SGD 50. It takes 10–20 minutes. Book a time online.

What if my custom IEMs don’t fit?

Refits are free within 30 days of delivery. For overseas orders, return shipping is charged separately. See Warranty.
