Ordering from Japan

Null Audio has made IEM and headphone upgrade cables by hand at our own studio in Singapore since 2008, and we build AAW custom IEMs and reshells. This guide covers what you need to know when ordering from Japan: paying in yen, shipping, import tax, sending ear impressions, warranty and returns. The legal details are on our Legal notice for Japan page.

Prices and payment in yen

On our Japanese site prices are shown in Japanese yen, and the amount shown at checkout is the amount you pay. You can pay by credit or debit card, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal, as offered at checkout. Null Audio is a trading name of NASTECH. Prices don't include Japanese import duty or consumption tax (see below).

Shipping to Japan

Every order ships from Singapore with tracking, and we email you the tracking number when the parcel leaves us.

  • EPAC: free on every order. Our tracked economy service, delivered 7–20 business days after dispatch. EPAC parcels aren't insured, and tracking often pauses for a few days while the parcel is handed over to Japan Post. If it hasn't arrived within 20 business days of shipping, email us with your order number.
  • FedEx International Priority: free on orders of USD 250 or more. About 1–3 working days (FedEx estimate), fully insured. Below USD 250, FedEx's live rate is shown at checkout.

Delivery times are estimates; customs clearance, weather or an unavailable recipient can add time. Full details are on our Shipping & Return page.

Production lead times

Most of our cables and all custom IEMs are made to order, so they ship once they're made. Delivery time comes on top.

  • Ready-stock items (universal IEMs, accessories): ship in 2–3 working days.
  • Cables: built to order, ship in about 1 week. Each product page shows the current lead time.
  • Custom IEMs: about 4 weeks after we receive your ear impressions or scan. Reshells: 6–8 weeks.
  • Rush service: custom IEMs and reshells in about 3 weeks, for USD 150 on top of the IEM price. Email sales@null-audio.com before paying so we can confirm a slot. The rush fee is non-refundable and the service isn't available over Chinese New Year.

Import duty and consumption tax in Japan

When you buy for your own use, your order is a personal import into Japan. Import duty and consumption tax are charged by Japan and paid by you, the recipient; they aren't included in our prices or shipping. As a guide (this is how our duty estimator calculates it):

  • Import duty: none on earphones, IEMs and cables.
  • Consumption tax: 10% of the taxable value. For personal imports the taxable value is 60% of the price, so the tax is about 6% of the price.
  • Smaller orders: no tax if the taxable value is ¥10,000 or less, which means an order of about ¥16,666 or less.

With FedEx, FedEx collects the tax on delivery together with its own clearance fee. With EPAC, Japan Post collects any tax on delivery. This is a guide only: the amount is decided by Japan Customs, and its rules may change. The cart page shows an estimate once you calculate shipping.

Custom IEMs and reshells from Japan

Order your model online or design it in the Custom IEM Builder; for a reshell, order on the reshell service page. Then send us the shape of your ears in one of two ways. Step by step: How to order custom IEMs.

Option 1: email a 3D scan (STL files)

This is easiest, since nothing has to be posted. Email the STL files with your order number to support@null-audio.com. The scan can be of ear impressions taken by an audiologist, or a direct scan of your ear canals. Please make sure that:

  • there is one STL file per ear, named left and right;
  • each scan goes past the second bend of the ear canal and includes the whole concha (the bowl of the outer ear);
  • the impressions were taken with the mouth open (a bite block).

Keep the physical impressions until we confirm the files work.

Option 2: post silicone ear impressions

  • Taking them: full-shell impressions, taken with the mouth open (a bite block) and going past the second bend of the ear canal. Give your audiologist the AAW Impressioning Guide.
  • Labelling: mark them left and right, and don't trim them.
  • Packing: put them in a crush-proof box with a copy of your order confirmation.
  • Shipping: send them by a tracked service to the address below, Attn: Lab Team. Once tracking shows delivered, email us and we'll confirm we have them.
  • Customs declaration: declare the parcel under USD 200 and describe what it is, for example "Silicone ear impressions for custom earphone manufacture". For a reshell, send your IEMs as well and describe them as "In-ear monitors sent for reshell, to be returned to owner". If a high value is declared, Singapore customs may charge GST; we usually pay it to release the parcel, then ask you to settle it.

If your custom IEMs don't fit right, tell us within 30 days of delivery and we refit them free; overseas customers pay the shipping. Custom-made items can't be returned for change of mind.

Warranty, returns and contact

  • Warranty: 1 year from the day your order is delivered, against defects in materials and workmanship. Email support@null-audio.com with your order number and photos, and we'll send return instructions; please don't send anything before then. Shipping to us and back is paid by you, under warranty too. See Warranty.
  • Returns: eligible standard items can be returned within 14 days of delivery, unused and in their original packaging, with a 30% restocking fee; shipping isn't refunded. Custom IEMs and cables made to a custom spec, length or connector can't be returned for change of mind. Within the same 14 days you can exchange an unused cable for another one with no restocking fee. Please email us before sending anything back.
